Jen Bervin’s erasure<\/p><\/div>\n

The contradictions and challenges of being American are raging.\u00a0 In an era of unstable pronouns, it may be generous to use the pronoun \u201cwe\u201d – to even assert that there is a \u201cwe,\u201d that \u201cwe\u201d are\u00a0 still one nation. \u00a0 As has been much remarked, we seem to inhabit different realities, with different facts or needs for facts. (Jay Rosen, professor and media critic calls it \u201cretreat from empiricism: http:\/\/pressthink.org<\/a>). \u00a0 And of course, we are swamped by vastly divergent waves of emotion\u00a0 – half the nation mourns while the other half feels vindicated, as if the avenging angel has swept in. \u00a0Call it a schizophrenic breakdown, at best.<\/p>\n

Visceral anger, a hatred has been stirred.\u00a0 It\u2019s\u00a0 almost a demonic enterprise.\u00a0 For Donald Trump\u2019s promises are impossibly, even cruelly out of reach.\u00a0 The question that plagues me is: Where will the unleashed hatred go?\u00a0 What will happen to the resentment, pushed to an irrational pitch?\u00a0 How do you hate an automation, a robot that took your job, how do you focus on what you can\u2019t see?\u00a0 When A hates B and B hates A, but that doesn\u2019t get them anywhere, they can both agree to hate C.\u00a0 It\u2019s called Scapegoating. \u00a0Once stoked and allowed to travel at will, it’s very hard to control. \u00a0 Fear shouldn’t rule us. \u00a0But no wonder people are scared.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
