LUFT<\/p>\n

Fourth of July
\n<\/i>In the aimless wind,
\n<\/i>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0tree tops luft\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n

Luft!<\/i>\u00a0 How brilliantly the poet conjures
\nthe circular motion \u2014
\nrudderless! – of old trees shifting,
\nhapless sails billowing.<\/p>\n

Trapped under a humid blanket
\nneither fish nor fowl
\nnor sun nor air
\nnor active compass<\/p>\n

we’re captive, vagabonding,
\nshuffling, going nowhere
\nwith a flurry of anxious
\ndistracting\u00a0motion.<\/p>\n

On S. Main I seek refuge: millennials
\nsipping coffee, cold press, Internet.
\nI savor luft <\/i>on the screen
\nin Dave\u2019s air conditioning.<\/p>\n

Now spellcheck acts up \u2014 first lift,<\/em>
\nthen left.<\/em>\u00a0 Utterly directionless.
\nWhen alone with nothing else to do,
\nlooking for kicks, Google it.<\/p>\n

Luft is short for Luftmensch, \u201can impractical
\n<\/i>contemplative person having no
\n<\/i>definite business or income.\u201d
\n<\/i>Luft,<\/em> German for air, mensch,<\/em> human being.<\/p>\n

Beside me, a girl drawing, some tattooed kids
\njoking.\u00a0 Jesus!\u00a0 In whose eyes are we
\nLuftmensch American? \u00a0Careful, be
\nsophisticated, be mindful of the Yiddish.<\/p>\n

Consider irony and humor with a jot
\nof bitter truth.\u00a0 Be faithful to your word,
\neven in this\u00a0hapless process.\u00a0 Google, a second time
\naround, makes meaning more elusive:<\/p>\n

\u201cOne side has the word,
\n<\/i>one side has the definition.\u00a0 Microwave and
\n<\/i>dishwasher safe<\/i>.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0 I\u2019m not kidding!<\/p>\n

The Fourth cometh – that we are going nowhere
\nis obvious.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know anything.
\nThe American flag lufts like Saran around its pole.
\nIf only I knew what luft<\/em> meant.<\/p>\n
