Standing at my mother’s vanity
\nI, girl child with wide eyes<\/p>\n

her self transformed nakedly
\nwith knots and tricks towards elegance,<\/p>\n

her hair teased to an oblong,
\nher neck, like Cleopatra’s, lengthened:<\/p>\n

I eyed the miniature Obelisk
\nthat cased her red lipstick.<\/p>\n

Heir and standard bearer
\nof beauty, of glamour<\/p>\n

from a temple at Luxor
\nto Place de la Concorde.<\/p>\n

I learned in a museum recently
\nDior made this emblem of Luxor – y,<\/p>\n

raising the everyday with this nifty
\npiece of glass and tube of wax.<\/p>\n

Though the lipstick wore down
\nand my mother passed on, she’d say,<\/p>\n

Let it fly, trip from lip to lip, Beauty,
\npass along your open secrets:
\nblow your kisses widely.<\/p>\n
