And all Americans, scout-like, ready at any moment,\u00a0
have cars built to transport a casket\u2014
their neighbor, the sudden hearse of their president<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when an elderly couple rushes riverside,\u00a0
a great flooding of light makes surreal
all red taillights, neon signs,\u00a0
sheer gold siding of an office building,
turning oil tanks into desert spectacles

They think it\u2019s a landing of E.T. spaceship,
a redemption, something to heal
this psyche-shredding moment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then it rains \u2013 then the sun slices –
